Rodolphe Töpffer - Les Amours de Monsieur Vieux-Bois (1837) The three biggest markets, Europe, America and Japan, are necessarily the most represented, but there are a few comics from the rest of the world as well. Since it has much room, it uses it to go from the very mainstream to the very experimental, and explores many different genres, including erotic comics. The list is available elsewhere on the Web, but not the additional entries featured in the book which I added. This first list simply comes from the ever-expanding collection of “1001 things you must hear, watch, read, play, see, taste, have sex with before you die” and more specifically, this is the 1001 comics you must read before you die, originally released in 2011. Also, the illustrations are only there for visual enjoyment, and must not be perceived as highlights: what are comics without pictures? As much as possible I tried to retro-translate the works’ titles to their original languages, since most of them are in French in the books. Going through a detailed exploration of the most acclaimed works would necessitate to basically write an essay, and that’s not my ambition, so I just went through my books about comics and collected the lists of recommended comics I own. I take it that people who are asking are simply more or less ignorant about the achievements of the medium.
